Full disclosure: I make it my pastime to hate on Democrats—and not because I’m Republican or Libertarian, in fact I don’t hold any political allegiance. But I simply relish in pointing out the mere hypocrisy of it all.
Democrats claim to uphold education but have long worked to block the doors of school choice for families who need more options.
But even as much as I like to show hate, I can also show credit where credit is due. In the midst of the polarizing debate on mask mandates in schools, Democrats are having a “come to Jesus” moment.
According to the Wall Street Journal,
“A nationwide poll by Echelon Insights in August found that 79% of respondents with an opinion support allowing families to take their children’s taxpayer-provided education money to a private or home school if their public school doesn’t mandate masks. Surprisingly, Democrats favored this school-choice proposal more than Republicans, with support at 82% and 78%, respectively.”
In another poll from RealClear Opinion Research, “support for school choice surged by 11 percentage points among registered Democrats during the pandemic—from 59% in April 2020 to 70% in June 2021.”
Sometimes the issue has to serve our interest before we can see the benefit for all. So, if took some schools not mandating masks for Democrats to see school as a means of empowering families, so be it.
I just hope post-Covid, Democrats can still hold on to the idea that school choice is a no-brainer.
